The Story & The Statement.
Since July/August 1974 Cyprus is de facto divided as a result of the Turkish military invasion and-ever since-occupation of the northern part of the island (37% of the sovereign territory of the Republic of Cyprus). In 1983 the Turkish Cypriot authorities, supported by Turkey, announced the establishment of the so called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” in the occupied part of the island.
“TRNC” remains internationally unrecognized. No country or international body recognizes it as a legal entity, with the sole exception of Turkey, which sponsors it and maintains there around 40.000 troops. The UN Security Council has called the international community to refrain from recognizing any other authority on the island other than the Republic of Cyprus. The European Union accepted the Republic of Cyprus as a full member state in 2004, clarifying that “the application of the acquis shall be suspended in those areas of the Republic of Cyprus in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control”.
Taking these into account, especially the fact that the establishment of the “TRNC” has been the outcome of illegal use of military force against Cyprus, as well as the fact that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus cannot exercise essential control upon the northern part of the island, “The PRESTIGE GROUP does not wish to have any kind of cooperation with the “TRNC”.”
